Larissa De Souza
Born in Sao Paulo, Brasil, 1995
Lives and works in Sao Paulo, Brasil
de Souza explores material and visual languages through painting, layering and re-configuring divergent mediums as essential protagonists within her scenes. The central figure within her work is the Afro-Brazilian woman existing within both her private sphere and community. Drawing upon collective narratives and experiences, both real and imagined, her works navigate between memory, body, desire and ancestry. Throughout her story-telling, de Souza aims to preserve communal memories on canvas, resisting the historical erasure of the Afro-Brazilian culture. Larissa de Souza incorporates a range of techniques and materials within her work including resin frames, collage, fabric, found objects, and embroidery. Her thickly textured paintings are characterized by the artist’s personal iconography and simple, abstracted environments that suggest psychological space.
